ToBy Dives Deep in His Debut Album L’Esprit

Indie rapper, ToBy just released his debut album L’Esprit, fresh off the heels of the lead single “Are We Ridin.”

ToBy combines sounds from present day rap, pop, and even indie rock. The album, L’Esprit goes with a story based around the artist, ToBy, and is his most personal work to be released. He touches on topics in his life like depression, anxiety, grief, lost love, and diffidence and hopes to reach people with similar backgrounds and stories.

His track “Boyfriend” from the album is a great example of his different styles all mixed into one track with his vulnerability on full display. He sings over a mufled rock instrumental about a past love with the guitar and drums growing in volume and energy with sounding desperate to match the vigor. In his words, this track is “one of the best songs I’ve ever made. We had the idea in the studio t make a really big rock opera section closer to when we had to turn the album in, and it turned out amazing and I’m in love with it.”

L’Esprit is also an ode to ToBy’s late grandmother who passed away from cancer in 2020. Since she helped raise him and always supported his musical journey when others did not, ToBy had an extremely close relationship with her. “Making music growing up in Miami was not very easy. It was a very judgmental environment. It was my parents wanting the best for me, they were immigrants from Haiti and didn’t understand why anyone would want to be a rapper,” says ToBy. Even when his parents didn’t agree she often stood up for him and told them to let him pursue what he felt best.

When you listen to this ToBy wants you to be able to relate to what he went through and hopes to be able to help you through his music.

“I hope people take away that they are not super alone in this world. I hope that by hearing my story and hearing me bare out my soul, as this is the most personal music I have ever made and I have never injected this much of my real life in my music before, people take away that the enormity of life is so grand and so vast and so much that the most we can do is experience it to its fullest; all the good, all the bad, and all the in-between.”
