Compton rapper Jay Worthy has been one of the most consistent artists on the West Coast. Putting on for the underground of the West Coast, Jay Worthy and his LNDN DRGS imprint have been able to modernize classic West Coast rap, infusing classic funk samples into their records or just rapping over the classic beat altogether.
I first paid attention to Jay Worthy and LNDN DRGS back in 2018 around the release of their “Aktive” project. What instantly stood out to me was the infusion of classic funk/soul records. Since then, I’ve been steadily keeping up with Worthy, and he has been keeping the “funk” alive in his music. That all came full circle with the release of his latest project, “Generation P.”
“Generation P” is a collaboration project between Jay Worthy, LNDN DRGS and the legendary George Clinton.
George Clinton revolutionized funk as the mastermind behind Parliament and Funkadelic. Those same funk records and sounds became a staple in West Coast “G-Funk,” and now Worthy has been able to work with the man himself for “Generation P.”
The 12-track project is 31 minutes long and has an all-star West Coast feature list. The Game, Snoop Dogg, YG, Ab-Soul, Ty Dolla $ign + more all make appearances on the project.
This is definitely a project that can bridge the previous generation of funk to modern-day rap.
“Generation P” feels like more than a collaboration. It’s a continuation of the musical connection between funk and West Coast hip-hop, with Jay Worthy helping carry that sound into a new generation.
