Star Bandz is an emerging Chicgao drill rapper who is going viral with hit song “Yea Yea”. The song ran up millions across DSPs in a few weeks. Sugarhill Ddot is also an emerging young rapper.
Sugarhill Ddot is from Harlem, New York and has been a noticeable face and voice in New York’s drill music scene since the movement moved Uptown. Like Star Bandz, Ddot has ran up millions of views across Youtube and streaming services. The two even have a viral track out now “My Baby”.
I got the chance to speak briefly with the emerging stars over a google meets conference to speak about their journey.
I had this burning question to ask Star Bandz regarding her journey in music thus far. Being from the Godfather city of “Drill” music, coming out and claiming oneself as a Drill artist really means something. Star Bandz, whether by her own accord or not, is a drill artist. So I had to ask her,
Is being a young woman Chicago “Drill” rapper embraced in Chicago ?
Star feels her music is embraced in her city because she confidently knows shes one of a kind.
“It’s that it’s not too many female rappers out here rapping like me, especially my age.I’m really doing my thing! People do rock with me anytime i have a show out here it rocks out.”
Both New York City and Chicago’s drill scenes have died down a bit. The subgenres were once two of the most streamed music available. Drill helped New York establish a new identity in music bringing it back to the forefront of the industry.
However NYC has taken a liking to a new sound, “Sexy Drill” popularized by Cash Cobain, Chow Lee, Vontee The Singer + more. This new soundwave of music has caused many to ask if the drill scene in the city was dead, when asked, Ddot responded::
“It’s not dead because I’m not going to say my guys doing it is not applying pressure. But for me I wouldn’t do it no more. If you look at my album it’s only two drill songs because my fans wanted it. I’m trying to move myself away from that. Five years from now I’m trying to be at the BET awards. You not going to see any n*gga talking about murder at the BET awards. I’m trying to be here for a long time.”
Both Star Bandz & Ddot are young artists with bright futures ahead of them, I’m excited to see how both of their careers continue to pan out and how they will grow as artist.
