Sampha Takes Us On A Trip Inside of His Mind With “LAHAI” (Review)

As fans, we tend to negatively take on this need for musical instant gratification that starts as an innocent indulgence for listeners that leads into a demand for our favorite musicians to push out as much product as possible for an ill-fated attempt to pacify our insatiable hunger.

However, during the 10+ year span of Sampha’s career, we are finally now being rewarded with a sophomore album in LAHAI. It’s everything we dreamed for it to be. It’s essentially as if he broke out a notebook and wrote down the interpretations of his dreams and then recorded them as songs.

Since his 2017 debut LP release “Process”, Sampha has worked on numerous hard-hitting projects such as Solange’s “When I Get Home” and Kendrick Lamar’s “Mr. Morale and The Big Steppers”.

He became a father in the middle of the pandemic. And now he’s used his life endeavors to bring us a whole new vision for expression.

LAHAI’s sound gives the ability to encompass time as a musical measurement, giving us beats that sound up tempo and slow paced simultaneously such as Spirit 2.0.

Suspended is my personal favorite of the tracklist. Jonathan L. Seagull speaks to the non-linear relationship we as people have with healing.

“Only” is definitely the mainstream track that doesn’t stray from the central intended feel of this album. Macedonian violinist Oleg Kondratenko and London music artist Lea Sen are the albums features.

Sampha is an exemplary artist that actually treats music like craftsmanship. It Makes you really question since music is considered art, why rush the process of creating a monumental piece?
