Chicago’s Solo Sam Is Continuing The Legacy Of Dope Chicago Artist.

The Windy City is home to some of the most iconic names in all of Hip-Hop. Kanye West, Common, Lupe and Twista and Chance The Rapper, Chief Keef, Lil Durk, G Herbo and Lil Bibby all rep the Chi.

I was able to chop it up with Solo Sam, who is living up to the standards set by Chi town legends. We spoke a little about his background, his latest project “Plated” and how growing up in the Chi influenced him. Check it out below.

“Two of the biggest influences are Lil Wayne & Missy Elliot”

Although Solo Sam is Chicago born and breed, he cited Lil Wayne & Missy Elliot among his top two influences. Weezy F Baby & Missy’s enjoyable music influenced Solo Sam to make music that listeners can vibe to.

While juggling being a student athlete in 2016, Solo Sam was able to gain national attention with the release of “Itis”. A DIY project, Solo Sam had zero features and produced the whole project himself. Itis was a reset for Solo Sam, who was dealing with an ambiguous situation: an identity crisis. Although Solo Sam was on a football scholarship at Valparaiso University, Solo Sam made the decision to withdraw from school to focus on music full time in 2016.

The goal was release 2-3 singles before this that you produced, get a run at it. Make your own beats, make your own project.

Fast forward to September of 2019, Solo Sam has released his second project “Plated” a six track EP. Solo Sam decided to name the project plated because in the cooking world, “plating” a dish is the final refinement of a meal leading to a visually satisfying and tasteful meal.

I wanted this tape to be a refinement of Itis

Further separating himself from the pack, Solo Sam’s roll out for the project was like none I’ve ever seen before. Linking with Chicago’s Cooper Fox Solo Sam created both a cook book and a coffee drink to accompany it’s release.

The idea stems from Solo’s father who is a painter and writer who cooked all the time. “I would come home to my Dad finishing writing something, finishing painting something and wanting to cook. I realized the artistic therapy of it”.

Solo Sam also wants his listeners to be more aware of what is being put into their bodies. Extremely humble and willing to use his experiences to inspire rising artist.

People need to have realistic exceptions. Stay consistent and don’t be a perfectionist
